Signes et Caracteres des Espirits, “Le Dragon Rouge” (Le Grand Grimoire), 1522.

The Grand Grimoire is a black magic grimoire. Different editions date the book to 1521, 1522 or 1421, but it was probably written in the early 19th century. It was authored by someone named Antonia Venitiana del Rabina who supposedly gathered this information from original writings of King Solomon. Also known as “The Red Dragon”, this book contains instructions purported to summon Lucifer or Lucifuge Rofocale, for the purpose of forming a Deal with the Devil. The book is called “Le Veritable Dragon Rouge” (“The True Red Dragon”) in Haiti, where it is revered among many practitioners of Voodoo. It is claimed they were placed under King Solomon’s throne by the Devil to tempt him. The work is divided into two books. The first book contains instructions for summoning a Demon and for the construction of tools with which to force the Demon to do ones bidding. The second book is further divided into two parts: the Sanctum Regnum and Secrets, de L’Art Magique du Grand Grimoire (“Secrets, of the magic art of the Grand Grimoire”). The Sactum Regnum contain instructions for making a pact with the Demon, allowing one to command the Spirit without the tools required in book one, but at greater risk. “Secrets” contains simpler Spells and Rituals one can employ after having performed the Ritual in the first book. Some editions contain a short text between these two parts, Le Secret Magique, où le Grand Art de pouvoir parler aux Morts (“The Magic Secret, or the Grand Art of being able to speaking with the Dead”), dealing with Necromancy.

“Formes du diable”

From: Jacques Auguste Simon Collin de Plancy: DICTIONNAIRE INFERNAL, Paris, 1863, p. 280-281.

The “Dictionnaire Infernal” (English: “Infernal Dictionary”) is a book on demonology, describing demons organised in hierarchies. It was written by Jacques Auguste Simon Collin de Plancy and first published in 1818. There were several editions of the book; perhaps the most famous is the 1863 edition, which included sixty-nine illustrations by Louis Le Breton depicting the appearances of several of the demons. Many but not all of these images were later used in S. L. MacGregor Mathers’s edition of “The Lesser Key of Solomon”. (wikipedia)

Here’s two fascinating one hundred year old grimoires; The Greater Key of Solomon (1914) and it’s companion volume The Lesser Key of Solomon GOETIA (1916), published by L.W. de Laurence the infamous plagiarist.
These books had a far reaching effect on the western world, putting forbidden knowledge in the hands of anyone who was daring enough to look inside. We must bare in mind that before such books as these most people had only heard of them in hushed whispers, hearing and reading stories of their use, conjuring up demons and the devil himself, and of Faust losing his soul. Then, finally the printing presses churned out these forbidden books, books that in many countries were illegal for fears of what they may unleash, for the fear of what dwelt within…

THE GRAND GRIMOIRE – known also as “The Red Dragon”. It is a collection of “black magic” grimoires believed to be as old as the 16th century AD, containing instructions purported to summon Lucifer or Lucifuge Rofocale, with the intent of forming an infernal pact (i.e. a “deal with the devil.”)

Quoting the Esoteric Archives:

“A. E. Waite pronounced this the most fantastic of the texts of the Black Magic cycle, and ’one of the most atrocious of its class; it has a process in Necromancy which is possible, say some occult writers – in the geniality of a lucid interval – only to a dangerous maniac or an irreclaimable criminal. It must be admitted that the Rite is highly unreasonable, but in dealing with such literature it seems unsafe to advance the objection, for it applies much too widely.’”

(Emphasis is mine.)

I strongly discourage anyone from attempting any ritual contained within The Grand Grimoire for reasons which should be plainly obvious. Do not try this at home.

Dictionnaire Infernal – A book on Demonology written by Jacques Collin de Plancy, French occultist and demonologist. First published in 1818, the Dictionnaire Infernal sought to catalog and explain all known superstition and demonology and spanned two volumes over the course of its several 19th century revisions and republications.

THE MAGICAL CIRCLE
This is the form of the Magical Circle of King Solomon, the which he made that he might preserve himself therein from the malice of the Evil Spirits. This Magical circle is to be made 9 feet across, and the Divine Names are to be written round it, beginning at Ehyeh, and ending at Levanah, Luna.

THE MAGICAL TRIANGLE OF SOLOMON
This is the Form of the Magical Triangle, into which Solomon did command the Evil Spirits. It is to be made at 2 feet distance from the Magical Circle and it is 3 feet across. Note that this triangle is to be placed toward that quarter where unto the Spirit belongeth. And the base of the triangle is to be nearest unto the Circle, the apex pointing in the direction of the quarter of the Spirit. Observe thou also the Moon in thy working. Anaphaxeton is sometimes written Anepheneton.

The coiled serpent is only shown in one private codex, the Hebrew names being in most cases simply written round in a somewhat spiral arrangement within the double circle. It is to be remembered that Hebrew is always written from right to left, instead of from left to right like ordinary European languages. The small Maltese crosses are placed to mark the conclusion of each separate set of Hebrew names. These names are those of the Deity Angels and Archangels allotted by the Qabalists to each of the 9 first Sephiroth or Divine Emanations.

In English letters they run thus, beginning from the head of the serpent:
✠ Ehyeh Kether Metatron Chaioth ha-Qadesh Rashith Ha-Galgalim S.M.M. (for “Sphere of the Primum Mobile”) ✠ Iah Chockmah Ratziel Auphanium Masloth S.S.F. (for “Sphere of the Fixed Stars,” or S.Z. for “Sphere of the Zodiac”) ✠ Iehovah Elohim Binah Tzaphquiel Aralim Shabbathai S. (for “Sphere”) of Saturn ✠ El Chesed Tzadquiel Chaschmalim Tzedeq S. of Jupiter ✠ Elohim Gibor Geburah Kamael Seraphim Madim S. of Mars ✠ Iehovah Eloah Va-Daäth Tiphereth Raphaël Malakim Shemesh S. of the Sun ✠ Iehovah Tzabaoth Netzach Haniel Elohim Nogah S. of Venus. ✠ Elohim Tzabaoth Hod Michaël Beni Elohim Kokav S. of Mercury ✠ Shaddaï El Chai Iesod Gabriel Cherubim Leanah S. of the Moon ✠.

Sigil of Lucifer

“According to some magicians, Lucifer rules over the East and commands the Europeans and the Asians.  He is often referred to as the king of hell, and is superior to Satan according to some demonologists.  He was evoked on Monday in the middle of a circle which contained his name and remained content when a mouse or venison-bit was offered to him.  One says he is facetious, and that he often pulls witches off brooms on their journey to the Sabbath and gives them a ride on his shoulders.  The witches of Moira in Sweden attested this in 1672.  They also describe Lucifer as gray with blue arms and red culottes decorated with ribbons.  Lucifer has the face of a beautiful young child, which changes to monstrous and inflamed when he is angry. According to some demonologists, he is a lover of justice in hell.  He is also the first to be invoked in litanies of the Sabbath.”
