I use a method that I developed myself based on a few other practices I have seen, and it works really well.
Activating the Sigil
Continuing with our above example, we are going to create an incantation that will activate this sigil.
Most of my incantations, particularly for sigil activation, are derived from Latin. I have found that the flow of words in Latin is particularly powerful in creating spells and incantations.
For this sigil, I will use the Latin word for “happy”.
Happy= Gavisus (joyous, rejoicing)
You’ll notice, however, that there are several different words in Latin that translate roughly to the same thing in English, so be sure to pick the best possible match.
I am also going to use the word for “create” .
Create= Creo (create, produce)
Now, combine the two words into one.
Creovisus= Create happiness.
However, we are not finished. Now that we have the sigil and the incantation to activate the sigil, we must complete the process by actually activating said sigil.
Place your hand over the sigil you have created and close your eyes. Imagine all of your energy pouring into that sigil, making it almost seem to glow. For me, it helps to visualize this energy as white light flowing from my palm. Once the energy has reached it’s peak, speak the incantation clearly and with purpose: Creovisus.
Visualize the sigil bringing to you unabounding joy and happiness. When you are ready, open your eyes.
The sigil is now activated and ready for use.
What do Sigils do?
Sigils can be created and activated to fulfill a number of different duties. Most commonly, sigils are used as a sort of charm, carried with a person (usually the creator) in order to bring about that particular sigils purpose. However, that is certainly not the extent of all that sigils can do!
I have used sigils before as a charm, a taglock for another person in a spell, as the spell itself, in curses, and much much more. As many spells as there are, there are just as many purposes for sigils.
The four symbols that appear in the site header was also the name of the fourth Led Zeppelin album, being one symbol for each band member.
1. Jimmy Page’s symbol = Saturn (ruler of Capricorn astrology sign) ‘Z’ is the astronomical symbol for Capricorn, the goat. The Zoso symbol is for the planet Saturn, and at the front or head we have the symbol Capricorn. Saturn is the ruling planet for Capricorn. For the ‘oso’ part, the circle with a dot in the center could be the sun (also an alchemical symbol for gold), and the axis and “S” representing the rotation of Saturn round the sun and Saturn’s role in resolving karma (the grim reaper). In astrology, Saturn alternately brings fortune and pain – a cycle, perhaps linked to the rotation of Saturn round the sun (which it does once every 29.45 years). 2. John Paul Jones’ symbol = confidence and competence This symbol is used to exercise evil spirits, with the note that a clumsy person would be unable to draw them. This infers that such a person is confident and competent in their abilities.
3. John Bonham’s symbol = the Trinity, or Father-Mother-Child This symbol also appears on The Hierophant Tarot card symbolising Osiris- Isis-Horus (Father-Son-Holy Ghost trinity). 4. Robert Plant’s symbol = Truth or Courage Robert Plant’s symbol is the feather of Ma’at, the Egyptian goddess of justice and fairness, and is the emblem of a writer (as in one who composes song lyrics). Symbol was drawn from the ancient Mu civilization, which exist about 15,000 years ago as part of a lost continent in the Pacific Ocean, somewhere between China and Mexico. All sorts of things can be tied in with the Mu civilization, even the Easter Island effigies. It can be found in “The Sacred Symbols of Mu” by Colonel James Churchward.
When Jimmy Page was asked what his symbol meant he said that the band members selected them from a “standard reference book” of sigils. The most accessible text to find these symbols is “Grimoires et Rituels Magiques”, by Francois Ribadeau Dumas (1972), and “The Book of Signs” by Rudolf Koch (1930).
The Sigillum Dei Aemeth, or Seal of the Truth of God, is most widely known through the writings and artifacts of John Dee. Dee’s system of angelic magic, known as Enochian, is heavily rooted in the number seven, a number which is also strongly connected with the seven traditional planets of astrology. As such, the Sigillum Dei Aemeth is primarily constructed of heptagrams (seven-pointed stars) and heptagons (seven-sided polygons).
The Outer Ring The Outer ring contains the names of seven angels, each associated with a planet. To find a name, start with a capitalized letter on the ring. If there is a number over it, count that many letters clockwise. If there is a number under it, count that many letters counterclockwise. Continuing the procedure will spell out the names: Thaaoth – Mars Galaas – Saturn Gethog – Jupiter Horlwn – Sun Innon – Venus Aaoth – Mercury Galethog – Luna These are the Angels of Brightness, who comprehend the seven “inward powers of God, known to none but himself.”
“Galethog” Inside the outer ring are seven symbols based on the letters forming “Galethog,” with “th” being represented by a single sigil. The name can be read counter-clockwise. These seven sigils are the “Seats of the One and everlasting GOD. His 7 secret Angels proceeding from every letter and cross so formed: referring in substance to the FATHER: in form, to the SON: and inwardly to the HOLY GHOST.”
The Outer Heptagon The names of the “Seven Angels who stand before the presence of God,” each also associated with a planet, were written vertically into a 7-by-7 grid. By reading the grid horizontally, you get the seven names listed in the outer heptagon. The seven original names were: Zaphkiel – Saturn Zadkiel – Jupiter Cumael – Mars Raphael – Sun Haniel – Venus Michael – Mercury Gabriel – Moon
The Central Structures (D. E. F. G. and H.) The next five levels are all based off of another 7-by-7 grid of letters. Each is read in a different direction. The letters are names of more planetary spirits, originally written in a zigzag pattern, starting in the upper left corner (the “el” of each name was removed in the creation of the grid): Sabathiel – Saturn Zedekieiel – Jupiter Madimiel – Mars Semeliel – Sun Nogahel – Venus Corabiel – Mercury Levanael – Moon The names between the outer heptagon and heptagram are constructed by reading the grid horizontally. They are the “Names of God, not known to the Angels; neither can be spoken nor read of man.” The names within the points of the heptagram are the Daughters of Light. The names within lines of the heptagram are the Sons of Light. The names within the two central heptagons are the Daughters of the Daughters and the Sons of the Sons.
The Pentagram The planetary spirits are repeated around the pentagram. The letters spelling out Sabathiel (with the final “el” again removed) are scattered around the outside. The next five spirits are spelled out closer to the center, with the first letter of each name within a point of the pentagram. Levanael is at the very center, surrounding a cross, a common symbol of earth.
Hi magickians & el chaotes, sharing one of my dearest magick circle creations so far. Initially, it is invented to be used with the Book of Stars grimoire but feel free to use it in any universe / elemental / etc kind of work.
I’m continuing my hunt for inspiration and magic circle creation, so expect more in the future.
A great potential lies in using QR codes for sigil magick. For example you can make a linkage sigil net across the city in form of QR code stickers that get charged or launched by passing strangers who decide to decode it, or direct the energy to your altar/self. You can share short spells, hide chants, statements of intent, or set url links that lead to some more obscure multimedia which belongs to the complete sigil project.
In QR code you can enter data as text, links, contact cards, info, geo location, etc. QRs are easily made with free web generator sites. After downloaded image file you can take it further:
– colored cells, color gradients and layered sigils as low opacity backgrounds – thanks to data correction in QR decoding you can “corrupt” 30% of code with centered logo/sigil. Cut unneeded parts so the QR gets better and faster readability. – some sites offer even funkier design options, as different shapes of the “eye” squares, color variations, or code styles. – try making 3D styled codes if you listen to witch house a lot (*guilty*) – magickian can make a magic circle and insert multiple QR codes into it, center piece for summoning and even simpler QR encoded correspondences in corners (simpler the data, simpler the code!) – finished thing can be printed on stickers (try to make them waterproof by sticking another layer of sticky transparent foil over it, youtube it) – !!! Always check your code by phone/s, or different QR scan software options while designing your code. Some combinations lower the readability so try to play with opacity, contrast and etc while simultaneously checking it.
– enjoy being an urban reality hacking chaos magickian!
Ah, the beautiful art of making powerful reality shattering magickal circles in occultism. I adore it. Each time making a circle represents solving a reality hacking puzzle which reprograms its matrix while creating the connections and currents; to and from other sides, above or below.
Circles have various uses from summoning energies and entities to unleashing powers. Creation, limiting, trapping, enchantment, summoning, connecting, the uses are really diverse. Circles come in different shapes and they can differ from practical and simple to complex and genial artwork, with all corresponding elements, signs, symbols, sigils, colors, names.
From old and ancient grimoires to modern and inventive ones, they’re the practical machinery on the altar: being a portal, mirror, window or door to the otherworldly. They’re reality breaking formula set in place having all the right (or wrong) frequencies. I personally love to have many different circles ready for various works, and mostly I use them for enchantment magick, evoking particular element energies or corresponding with eight colors of chaos sphere. Also I design unique circles for the first creation of new sigil servitors.
Shape and geometry – In circle many different shapes can be drawn corresponding to the intent. Triangles for summoning and trapping, squares for balance between four sides and elements, star shapes with points that correspond with planets or energies. With further research you can discover how in East triangle is used for expansion, square being spiritual base for physical form, pentagon a result of manifested experience, etc. All intertwined together it can tell us if the circle is directing energy somewhere, holding it, releasing, or maybe creating a balanced unity. Layered star pointed shapes can bring further an unison of different factors.
Correspondences and signs – thorough research magus can come up with the “right” symbols, seals or sigils. Names of different entities can be written inside circles borders. Add your sigils and correspondences. Corners may call up to four sides of the world, elements, gods or deities that come in four.
Color of the circle or color of the paper which adds to intent. Some parts of circle may be empty where a magus puts his paraphernalia. Will the circle be used on a floor in bigger size or be just a small altar addition? Also, through the linkage sigil on a circle, additional energies may be connected to it.
So much must be thought over yet when finished, it becomes a great magickal piece. If you like tradition you can always have your blast in the old grimoires, if you wanna try something new, learn, combine, test and see for yourself.
