“[Fig. 6] will enable you to discover the most hidden secrets; you will be able to penetrate everywhere without being seen, and not a single word in the universe can be uttered without it coming to your ears, whether you wish to listen to it yourself or to have brought back to us by your agents when you order them to do so…repeat these words and place the talisman near your ear while you hold the ring tightly in your left hand: Nitrae, Radou, Sunundam.”
Fig. 7 “Place this ring on the little finger of your left hand and hold the talisman to your ear, and the most discreet man will divulge to you his most hidden thoughts. Here are the two words: Noctar, Raiban, and if you add a third word, which is Biranther, your greatest enemies will not be able to prevent themselves from loudly publishing their projects against you.”
Sigil magick is primarily understood from 3 different theories of understanding, these theories being the way of understanding how sigils are able to manifest. Practitioners will usually work with one of these theories, and will understand sigil magick from that point of view. From what I understand all of these theories are legitimate, and should not be looked at separately, but much rather together in order to have a higher understanding of the ins-and-outs of sigil manifestation. These theories I like to refer to as energy theory, consciousness theory, and psychological theory.
Energy theory:
Energy theory is the understanding that sigils work through the process of gathering up spiritual energy that is intended for a specific purpose, and when it is cast out that energy will go forth into the universe to manifest that intention. This is a theory that primarily works off the understanding of spiritual energy, and raising that energy in order to do a certain task.
Consciousness theory:
Consciousness theory is the understanding that sigils work through implanting sigils in the subconscious, so that they will be able to interact with the universal conscious in order to manifest a desired outcome. This theory works primarily off the understanding of universal consciousness, and how we are all connected to it, and because of that are able to influence it in order to make our desires a reality.
Psychological theory:
Psychological theory is the understanding that sigils work through the act of allowing you to focus on a specific construct, or situation, through the representation of the sigil. This is said to allow your subconscious mind to pull you in the direction of what you desire, by it suggesting to your normal waking consciousness certain decisions that will help you achieve your goal.
There are critiques, and criticisms to all of these theories but all of them support a very good understanding of the essence of sigil magick, and are all important to get acquainted with.
This post isn’t about creating sigils but, rather what they are and how to use them to their fullest potential. A Sigil is a symbol, but not just any ordinary symbol. They are sigils that are created with intention, will, and magic. They are vessels that carry your intentions- a means of making them manifest. There are three very distinct views on this matter: Instant, Passive, and Active.I personally believe all are correct. However, one method may be more suitable for certain Sigils than the others.
Please note:
It is very important that, while you are drawing the Sigil, you are present and mindfully putting the right intention into it.
Sigils are activated upon creation but can be further powered using any of the following three methods. If you have a book made specifically for Sigils, (especially if you create or keep Sigils for cursing) be sure to create or draw Sigils on the front and back covers that will cancel the effects of all other sigils within the book.
Instant Sigils:
This method is a One-Shot-Johnny. It is the strongest in terms of manifestation. However, the effects are very short-lived. This method involves destroying the Sigil. Once the Sigil is destroyed its power is at 150% but decreases back to 0% at an exponential rate. Depending on the caster, it could last up to two days. I use this method to amplify my spells and intentions.
Here’s how it works:
Take a Sigil, let’s say one for empowering intentions, and draw it onto a piece of paper. Charge the Sigil. You can do this is sooooooo many ways. ‘pray’ to it, masturbate to it, set crystals on it, leave it in the moonlight, etc. Then, once you have set your spell and have started the ritual, burn the Sigil. You are not limited in how you can destroy the Sigil! You can burn, tear, shred, melt, smudge, or soak them (If drawn in water-based ink). The effects will be manifest immediately.
Passive Sigils:
In this form of Sigilwork, Sigils will only manifest while they aren’t remembered. The moment that they are remembered, they lose their effect, or it becomes very weak.
Here’s how it works:
Take a Sigil, let’s say one for positivity, and draw it on a piece of paper. Then charge the Sigil. Then, place the Sigil in a place which no one will find or see it, not even yourself. The Sigil will really start working its magic once you have entirely forgotten about it.
Active Sigils:
Active sigils are powered by remembering them and feeding them intention.
Here’s how it works:
Take a Sigil, let’s say one for protection from negative energy, and draw it on your skin, a piece of paper, or a miscellaneous object you keep on you. Then you would rub or ‘pray’ to the Sigil whenever you needed it, pouring the intention of protection into it as you did so. This strengthens the Sigil and causes a more direct manifestation at the same time. You can charge these Sigils the same as Passive Sigils.
Sigils in Spellcraft:
As I had mentioned above, I use sigils to amplify my focus or intentions. There are other ways to use them in spells. You could even make a spell entirely from Sigils.
In larger spells, you can create Spell Circles- or incorporate Sigils into Sacred Circles. Below is an example of a Spell Circle.
In the center of the circle is the Sigil that acts as the root for the entire spell. This Sigil is basically like the subject of a sentence. Whereas the symbols on the ring of the circle are the actions.
You can create Spell Circles of your own! Step 1: Draw a circle Step 2: Draw a Sigil inside that circle. Step 3: Write the specified implementation of said Sigil around the perimeter of that circle. The language doesn’t matter- as long as it boosts your headspace. (I created my own language/cipher/cryptograph for my GreyGrimoire so that peering eyes wouldn’t be able to read it.) Step 4: Create the rest of the spell around the Spell Circle. (Whether you’re making a spell bottle, or enchanting and Item or casting a curse. Just gather your materials and build correspondences.) Step 5: Cast that mamma jamma!
I have made a Masterpost about Spell Circles and you can find it HERE.
If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to ask me or another blog! Remember, everyone’s craft is different- These are beliefs from my craft. Though, I try to be as respectful as possible to other crafts.
So, if you’ve been practicing as a chaos magician for a little while now, good work! If not, and this stuff sounds cool enough that you would like to get started, check out Chaos Magic 101 [here]!
After a bit of practice, you should now be well versed in things like firing sigils using the SPLIFF method (Remember, from [Oven Ready Chaos]), meditating, learning a divination system or two.
By now you may have also branched out and tested tech from other systems of magick like candle spells (If you’re unfamiliar, Aidan Wachter has a super straightforward method of doing this, which can be found [here]) or Jan Fries’ (author of the criminally underrated book Visual Magick, which you should definitely read and can be found [here]) Cup Meditation / Invocation. Not strictly necessary as of yet to have branched out a bit, but nice work if you’ve found something cool to do.
Either way, the notion that practice doing these things, not the theory behind them, is the best teacher still applies! So be sure to get out there and try some stuff!
After having done this whole chaos magick thing for a bit, you may be wondering where to go from here, or encountered some sort of problem that requires a solution little more finesse or a little more longevity than a sigil can provide. If this is the case, a viable solution may be constructing a servitor to complete the task at hand.
“But Key, What the Hell is a Servitor?”
I’m glad you asked! An easy way to think of a servitor when you’re still a beginner is as a sigil that has come alive; some small creature that’s reason for being is solving a problem, completing a task, manipulating the probability of an outcome, or something along those lines. There’s a bit more nuance to it than that (if you’re really curious, and willing to be more than a little confused, there are some good theory discussions found [here]) but for now this operative explanation should hold up just fine.
“Okay, so how do I make a servitor?”
So here’s where things can get a little weird. From what I’ve seen, there isn’t one super uniform and universally accepted way to do this. Also, there are a few examples [here] [here] of sigils somehow evolving into Servitors all on their own. That said, there are a number of internally consistent methods and ideas that chaos magicians utilize regardless of procedure.
From this, I propose the following general model, which has been pieced together through a combination of my own experience, the experiences of extremely good chaos magicians, resources available in print, and resources available on chaosmatrix for use here:
1. Decide on a goal and state it out loud with as much conviction and certainty as you can. Classically this is just called the statement of intent, which was and still can be a big deal for old chaos magick rites.
2. Decide on a name for the servitor. Make this something a bit uncommon, such that a friend won’t bop in to your room and accidentally call the name of a thought ghost and ask it to bring them a coke. The necessity of names is a mildly warm take with a lot of discourse surrounding it but I find this to be an important step for a lot of reasons:
names have power, the act of naming someone or something has a ton of weight behind it
it’s an easy way to address and call up the servitor
in the event something goes wrong, names are a classic (some of the oldest “western” magick we know of, seen [here], does this way to gain magical leverage and increase the efficacy of what you’re doing.
3. Make 2 sigils as you learned to do in Oven Ready Chaos. The first one will be just like a normal sigil that you’d make to solve this problem. For example, let’s say you’re making a servitor to draw money. You can use a phrase like “it is my will to more frequently find and acquire usable currency” and turn it into a sigil. The second sigil will be the name of your Servitor. Draw these together at the top of a sheet of paper or make some digital art and put it at the top of a document. Draw a circle around them or superimpose these sigils to link them together graphically.
4. Write what’s called the Contract for your Servitor. This is an actual written document that you create that goes through a few super important things:
a.) The linked sigils of the servitor up at the top (as seen in the last bit of step 3)
b.) A phrase linking the sigils and animating the servitor with a goal. This can read something like “I name you (name): in doing so I give you life. I shape you in the image of (what you want the Servitor to look like, which I’ll get to later): in doing so I give you form”
c.) A specific and detailed description of what you want the Servitor to do
d.) A clause along the lines of “in accomplishing your goals you will not bring harm to any being that I care about” if that’s a thing that matters to you
e.) A “Self destruct procedure” That allows you to destroy the Servitor in a very straightforward way. I’ve heard methods of doing this ranging from putting the contract into a fire to saying a nonsense phrase like “your ship has sailed, and that ship is the banana boat to flavor town. May you deep fry in peace” (I shit you not- if there’s one thing us crusty old chaos magicians have it’s a sense of humor). Whatever you do for this, ensure that the procedure won’t just happen accidentally and leaves no room for ambiguity. Also, quick note, THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT DO NOT FORGET TO DO THIS
f.) Some way to link the Servitor to you, if that’s a thing that’s important to the goal.
g.) a method of “feeding” or some way that the Servitor can gain ~energy~ after the fact. This will generally take the form of standard offerings to spirits, such as waiving the contract through incense a few times a month, burning a candle down over the contract every so often, stuff like that.
5. Astute readers may now realize that we’ve kinda gone through the SPL of SPLIFF, so now naturally we move to the I and the first F (hopefully by now you see that there is a huge amount of cross-over between sigils and servitors, which will be discussed at great length along with egregores and godforms in a later post), Intense Gnosis and Fire. For servitor creation, I have found that you need to much deeper into the gnostic state than for anything you would normally do, which takes a lot of practice and experience (and often, although not strictly necessary, in conjunction with a large quantity of psychoactive or otherwise mind-altering substances… quick disclaimer, don’t be dumb. I’m just some dude on the internet so don’t be an idiot with what you choose to do here).
6. While in this deep gnostic state, you will strongly visualize the form of the servitor along with the sigils, as mentioned in steps 3 and 4b. Things will generally get weird by now, but just roll with it. along with this visualization, you will “fire” the linked sigils of the servitor.
7. Perform a beefy preliminary feeding in order to further empower the servitor via whatever method you decided upon in step 4g
8. Set then servitor on its merry way and banish super hard.
Now you may notice that I left out the second F in SPLIFF, and this is entirely intentional. It is important that you do not forget about your servitors, or else they may “go rogue”, meaning they may try to subvert your goals in addition to gaining pseudo-sentience which is usually problematic. This can cause a lot of problems later on down the road (astral parasite anyone?), so it’s advised that at the early signs of a servitor going rogue (such as problems with functionality, mild poltergeist activity, problems with feeding, divination telling you something is wrong relation to function or work, etc) to evaluate the contact and the methods of feeding. At this point, if a workable, fast solution does not become apparent, deletion is recommended.
Servitors going rogue is a problem faced by many people when they are beginners, including me back in the day (my former roommate still thinks that the dorm is haunted, sorry bud), but it’s a nice experience to have at some point in terms of learning what to do when magick inevitably explodes in your face and addressing it in an intelligent, workable manor. Plus, how will you ever learn if you don’t try? As always, practice over theory.
So that’s about it for the method, so let’s see what the practice may actually look like.
Let’s say you, a budding chaote, decide that you could use a bit more love in your life. Although you’ve found that sigils are nice for some one-off scenarios like finding a hookup at a club or a bar, you want something a bit longer lasting.
As such, you decide that a servitor is the right solution for you.
You decide upon the statement of intent, “It is my will to encounter a compassionate romantic partner” and turn it into a glyph. You also decide on the name FlimFlamZimZam for the servitor and make this into a glyph as well, combining it with the first. You run through the GPR twice to fully banish before the rest of the process. You write up a contract, stating that you want the servitor to function until you enter into a romantic relationship with a caring partner, after which the servitor will cease to exist. You ensure the inclusion of a destruct code, and add your spit atop the combined glyphs to link the servitor to you alone. You also include that you’ll burn a stick of musk incense atop the contract once a week until the task is complete. You then enter a state of intense excitatory gnosis by downing a few caffeine pills and listening to [this] on loop at max volume for an hour or so. You enter the deep, trance-like gnosis, and visualize the servitor atop the seal, shaping it into what you want it to be. After the state winds down, you light some musk as per the contract and banish with the GPR once more.
Afterwards, you pull a tarot card, asking about the state of the servitor. You draw The World upright, indicating that the servitor is up and at ‘em finding you a partner already. You decide that this is good enough, so you put on your favorite sweater and black skinny jeans, head to your favorite coffee shop, only to have the cute guy from your linguistics seminar sit down next to you, offer to get you a cappuccino, and awkwardly ask you to see a New Primals show later that night. You go to the show and have a complete blast, and enter into a fun little relationship for the rest of the semester.
Hope that this helps out and provides some clarity in the murky world of creating servitors. If you got any questions or just want to talk magick, feel free to drop me an ask or shoot me a DM.
This has been Chaos Magick 102 of the Chaos Magic for Beginners series, where there will be more posts on a variety of subjects coming soon.
So @dontusemycauldron mentioned this to me at some point, and it took a few days for it to really sink in. They told me how some people put sigils on their photos to prevent people from using them as taglocks for things like cursing. And I went, “well holy shit, that is fucking clever,” and proceeded to do it with every single one of my selfies I’ve posted to Tumblr. Not because I’m concerned, but I like to put faith in preventative measures.
I decided I was going to show you guys how to do it – at least with SAI, because that’s the program I tend to use for art things now (and I can’t find a good crack of Photoshop anymore). However, any art or digital media program that makes use of layers and transparencies can be used for this technique.
First off, you want your sigils. I made two personal ones, and I also made two for Tumblr use. However, I’m going to recommend that you create your own sigils with your own statements of intent, if you can.
“This photo is bound from being used as a taglock.”
“This photo is not successfully used as a taglock for cursing.”
Ideally, you want digital sigils with transparent backgrounds, so you can avoid as much visual disturbance to your picture – you don’t want people to see or know there is anything over top of it, right?
Anyway, now on to the (SAI) tutorial!
Open your selfie and your sigils; you can switch between them along the bottom of the SAI window. Copy and paste the sigils onto your picture. I do this by clicking on the sigil’s canvas, hitting Ctrl+A and then Ctrl+C, then selecting the canvas with the selfie and hitting Ctrl+V. I can show the screen commands, however, for those that aren’t so tech savvy:
The “paste” option is also in the “edit” menu, as you can see. When you’ve done that, your selfie should look something like this:
Well, you know, you won’t look like me…but your sigils will have pasted in the top left corner of your picture. And they’re very obviously visible. BUT fortunately we’re not done with it yet.
Arrange your sigils over top of the face part of the selfie, however you want. I didn’t specify before, but the icon that looks like the cross with the arrows on each end (highlighted in blue here) :
…that’s the move tool; click on that, then on each separate layer, and you can move the layer around as you wish.) You definitely wanna do this before you change any of the transparency of the sigils, while you can still see them. Ultimately it doesn’t matter how you arrange them, just as long as they are on your face. Mine look like this:
It almost makes a heart shape, lol. So, those familar with SAI know where to look to see the layers. Mine were on the left-hand side by default, I know that is something you can change, however. They look like this:
On the bottom you can see the separate layers – your picture, and the sigils each on their own layer. Above that, you can see the “mode” and “opacity” tools. Those are the ones we care about.
Experiment with the mode if you want – it isn’t required, but it can help. I like to put mine on “overlay,” because it adds to the visualization of the sigils seeping into the picture and blending in to it. You need to click on each separate sigil layer to apply the mode. That makes it look like this:
And with that we’re almost done! Finally, just change each of the sigil layer’s opacity to 1% by clicking on the opacity bar and dragging it almost all the way down. You want them to not be at zero because they still need to be on the pictures and not “off,” but if you put them at any higher than 1%, you can still see them, and you definitely do not want people being able to see the sigils. Once you’re done that the selfie look like this:
Can you even tell there are sigils over top of that? There are. Four sigils, now, actually, lol. And this is how the layers look over on the side in SAI:
As you can see, the mode has been set to overlay on both, and they are both at 1% opacity. From there, save your picture (file, save as), feeling free to specify in the title that one has been magic’d. Then, you can upload them without any worry!
Of course, this can be done with sigils for other purposes – I just made this post with the intention of preventing selfies being used as taglocks, because that’s what I did to mine today. However, you can easily apply any sort of glamours to your selfies, if you desire.
I hope this helps anyone, or inspires anyone! Let me know if you have any more questions, or if I wasn’t so clear about things! This is my first time making a tutorial for any art program, I dunno if I did any good… But, yeah, just let me know if you have more questions or anything! 🙂
