The Clavis Mystica.

“En Giro Torte Sol Ciclos Et Rotor Igne” (The Spiritual Sun has turned the Ages in a Circle and is their Mover with Fire) are words referred to in the Ogdoadic system of High Magick as the “Clavis Mystica.” Taken all together, they are a palindrome – reading the same forwards as they do backwards. The words are not easy to translate, being a mixture of medieval Greek and Latin, and they form the Sacred Heart of Mysteries and serve as a most perfect Invocation of those Inner Plane Powers.

But what does it mean to “turn the ages in a Circle?” Marsilio Ficino explains: “Eternity is the image of God; the Cosmos, of Eternity; the Sun, of the Cosmos; and Man, of the Sun. People call Transformation Death, because the body is dissolved, but in fact life withdraws into the Unmanifest.  I shall tell you, as you are listening with such reverence, my beloved Hermes, that all these things that have been thus Dissolved and indeed the Cosmos, are transformed. Each day a part of the Cosmos withdraws into the Unmanifest, but the Cosmos is never Dissolved. This is what happens to the Cosmos, these are its Cycles and its Mysteries. The Cycles are a continual rotation and the Mystery is the Renewal.”

The daily withdrawal of the Cosmos is the principal concept here, symbolized to the ancients by the setting of the Sun – the well-known journey of Ra and other Solar Gods through the Underworld. This is of course followed by the Dawn: this is the Regeneration, the Rebirth of the Adept after the Sojourn of the Darkness. Thus is this palindrome whose very orthographic structure symbolizes the Cycles of “Continual Rotation” and Renewal.

You can see these eight words in the beautiful marble inlay on the floor of the Baptistery of San Giovanni, where they encircle an image of the Sun, and you can trace the footsteps of the greatest minds of the Renaissance that were quite familiar with this palindrome and still view this sight today inside the eight-sided Baptistery of Florence which is situated in the Piazza del Duomo.

Circular chart showing a modern set of Talismanic Geomantic Symbols.

The chart informs the Geomancer on the Elemental, Planetary and Zodiacal Correspondences (conforming to Agrippa’s ideas on Planetary Rulership). The upper half shows the Diurnal Figures and the lower half the Nocturnal. The Arabic words in the center of the Circle, “Ilm-al Raml”, translates to the “Science of the Sands”.

“Geomancy is an Art of Divination, wherby the judgement may be rendred by lot, or Destiny, to every question of every thing whatsoever, but the Art hereof consisteth especially in certain points where of certain figures are deducted according to the reason or rule of equality of inequality, likenesse or unlikenesse,; which Figures are also reduced to the Coelestiall Figures, assuming their natures and proprieties, according to the course and forms of the Signes and Planets.” – Henry Cornelius Agrippa

STAR MAGICK CIRCLE

Hi magickians & el chaotes, sharing one of my dearest magick circle creations so far. Initially, it is invented to be used with the Book of Stars grimoire but feel free to use it in any universe / elemental / etc kind of work.

I’m continuing my hunt for inspiration and magic circle creation, so expect more in the future.

All the best chaotically,

Protection Circle Methods

devnine:

I thought I’d post some methods I use for protection circles, for people to learn or just see how others might do it!

To begin, the basic goal of a protection circle is to create a sort of threshold, over which nothing can cross that you don’t allow. To do this, you channel energy to link other specified points of energy together, and form a wall.

(As always, try to cleanse everything that isn’t sealed before working with it!)

Candle Method: Set up any number of candles, so long as you can form a circle with them; I prefer my minimum amount to be five. Take your lighting tool and, starting from the top, light each candle clockwise. Once done, set your tool aside, and begin focusing on the candles.

Start at whichever one you like, then concentrate and visualize extending a band of energy from it to one of the candles beside it, continuing until you feel like the energy band has been established and is solid between them. Keep focusing, keeping that band thoroughly in mind, and repeat with the next candle, going around in a circle until you connect the last band to the first candle.

Now that you have the basis set up, it’s time to really make a shield: imagine the energy raising into a shining wall, solidifying, filling in all gaps to make the circle into a barrier. As you feel like the wall is coming to completion, instruct it with both visualization and instinctive will to repel energy, and not to draw it in.

Once you’re done, and you feel as if the energy has been properly shaped and instructed, you now have a protection circle! Only energy you intend or allow to go through it will be allowed. When you’re done with it, blow the candles out counterclockwise, starting from the top, and focus a bit on releasing and dispersing the remaining energy. (I prefer to do this during my after-spell cleansing.)

Salt Method: Prepare a fair amount of salt for use; you can even use pre-charged salts, such as sun or moonsalt. For this, though, I’ll be assuming the salt is empty and cleansed.
Pour the salt in a circle, preferably with about a fairly-even, half-inch thickness, around the area you want to enclose.

Sit within it, and focus on connecting to the salt as you would a crystal; after all, it basically is! Once you have, charge it, again, just as you would a crystal-but, instead of just leaving the energy in it, start visualizing a shining barrier of light raising from it, similar  to the candle method. Will it to solidify, to have no gaps, and instruct it to repel energy and not draw any in as it starts to finish.

Once you feel as if the wall is solid and properly-coded, you should have a nicely-made protection circle. When done with it, tap back into the salt and channel the energy out of it into the surrounding environment, then gather back up or disperse the salt after cleansing it and whatever remaining energy is left over.

Extra Tips: You can use the candle method with several different things replacing candles; charged clear quartz, granite, obsidian, seashells, or runes for protection arrayed in the same way as candles-and used to make a protection circle by the same method I described-will work just as well! (If using runes, however, make sure that’s the only kind of rune you’re using at the time, or the others might mess with it.)

Similarly, you can use the salt method with any ground-up mineral, or even ground eggshells, if you’re so inclined!

I hope this helps some people, or at least is just interesting; thanks for reading!

Zodiac Wheel.

The Zodiac is an imaginary belt of the Heavens, within which are the apparent paths of the Sun, Moon and Planets. The belt contains twelve Constellations of Stars (hence the twelve Signs of the Zodiac) and each of the twelve Signs are governed by one of these four Elements: Earth, Fire, Air or Water. Astrology plays a big part in the Zodiac, as it is the actual study of influence that the Sun, Moon, Stars and Planets have on an individual at the time of their Birth (which creates all the Sun/Moon/Rising Signs of the Zodiac).

The Intersection of Art and Science.

Science and Art probe Reality for different Truths. They may examine the same exact phenomena we encounter as sentient beings, however, by different methods and questions. Both are Ultimate Manifestations of Consciousness and both require and inspire Creativity. Assigning rank or capability is possible only when enforcing specific situations and even then that would be based on the individuals background and biases, therefore rendering it no longer ‘Absolute’ on the grand scheme of things.

Of the many human disciplines, there are few that could seem more divergent than Art and Science. The artist employs image and metaphor; the scientist uses number and equation. Art creates illusions meant to evoke emotion, while science engages in the pursuit of empirical verification. There is, to some degree, a physiological cause for this apparent divergence: the two halves, or hemispheres, of the brain. The right side of the brain is responsible for emotions and intuition, the left for logic and reason. Yet the notion of two brains gives rise to the function of one Mind. Perhaps it is this one “Undivided Mind” that presents a way forward through the monumental cultural changes we now face, enabling us to surf this dynamic moment in history from a platform of Balance and Symmetry.

Neil deGrasse Tyson also discussed the possibility for Universal Truths within the Realms of Science and Art. He notes that one of the definitive differences is that with Science, the same answer should be uncovered regardless of the observer in pursuit. Art, however, produces answers completely unique to the observer. This intellectual collision of seemingly disparate bedfellows, that something magical and unexpected happens: new patterns emerge; new connections are forged between previously unconnected ideas and inspiration reigns. The main difference between Science and the Arts is not that they are different sides of the same coin, even different parts of the same Continuum, but rather, they are Manifestations of the same thing. The Arts and Sciences are Avatars of Human Creativity.

Samuel Liddel MacGregor Mathers – The Magical Circle of King Solomon, “The Goetia: The Lesser Key of Solomon the King”, 1904.

THE MAGICAL CIRCLE
This is the form of the Magical Circle of King Solomon, the which he made that he might preserve himself therein from the malice of the Evil Spirits. This Magical circle is to be made 9 feet across, and the Divine Names are to be written round it, beginning at Ehyeh, and ending at Levanah, Luna.

THE MAGICAL TRIANGLE OF SOLOMON
This is the Form of the Magical Triangle, into which Solomon did command the Evil Spirits. It is to be made at 2 feet distance from the Magical Circle and it is 3 feet across. Note that this triangle is to be placed toward that quarter where unto the Spirit belongeth. And the base of the triangle is to be nearest unto the Circle, the apex pointing in the direction of the quarter of the Spirit. Observe thou also the Moon in thy working. Anaphaxeton is sometimes written Anepheneton.

The coiled serpent is only shown in one private codex, the Hebrew names being in most cases simply written round in a somewhat spiral arrangement within the double circle. It is to be remembered that Hebrew is always written from right to left, instead of from left to right like ordinary European languages. The small Maltese crosses are placed to mark the conclusion of each separate set of Hebrew names. These names are those of the Deity Angels and Archangels allotted by the Qabalists to each of the 9 first Sephiroth or Divine Emanations.

In English letters they run thus, beginning from the head of the serpent:
✠ Ehyeh Kether Metatron Chaioth ha-Qadesh Rashith Ha-Galgalim S.M.M. (for “Sphere of the Primum Mobile”) ✠ Iah Chockmah Ratziel Auphanium Masloth S.S.F. (for “Sphere of the Fixed Stars,” or S.Z. for “Sphere of the Zodiac”) ✠ Iehovah Elohim Binah Tzaphquiel Aralim Shabbathai S. (for “Sphere”) of Saturn ✠ El Chesed Tzadquiel Chaschmalim Tzedeq S. of Jupiter ✠ Elohim Gibor Geburah Kamael Seraphim Madim S. of Mars ✠ Iehovah Eloah Va-Daäth Tiphereth Raphaël Malakim Shemesh S. of the Sun ✠ Iehovah Tzabaoth Netzach Haniel Elohim Nogah S. of Venus. ✠ Elohim Tzabaoth Hod Michaël Beni Elohim Kokav S. of Mercury ✠ Shaddaï El Chai Iesod Gabriel Cherubim Leanah S. of the Moon ✠.
